The drive
The route is Route 1 the whole way — east out of Tel Aviv, past the Ben Gurion interchange, then the climb from Sha’ar HaGai up into the city. It is the same road the airport transfers use, so a Tel Aviv to Jerusalem run effectively passes the airport on the way.
The Jerusalem approaches are the least predictable part. The city sits at about 815 m and the road climbs roughly 800 m from the Sha’ar HaGai foothills. The Harel Tunnel and a straightened Motza bridge, built between 2013 and 2017, removed most of the dangerous curves — but not the congestion. When Route 1 is blocked, the usual alternative is Route 443.
Flying out — leaving enough time
Allow for the drive, plus check-in and security. Most international departures at Ben Gurion want you there well ahead of the flight, and the security queues are longest in the early morning. Give us your flight time and we will suggest a pickup time that works backwards from it.

The regulated taxi fare in Israel is metered, set by a Ministry of Transport price-control order (the current one runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027) and includes a ₪5.00 surcharge on rides leaving the airport. When the train is the better answer
Israel Railways runs from the station under Terminal 3 to Tel Aviv in roughly 11 to 20 minutes, stopping at HaHagana, HaShalom, Savidor and Tel Aviv University. It is cheaper than any taxi and, in heavy traffic, often quicker.
- Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by train: roughly 30–35 minutes between the city-centre stations, unaffected by traffic.
- Trains and most buses stop from Friday afternoon until Saturday nightfall. Taxis keep running through Shabbat.
- The train leaves you at one station on the edge of the city — from there you still need a taxi or the light rail.
